In the USA:
Christopher, or Chris for everyone.
Arrived in New York from Antwerp-Belgium on April 29, 1906, 13 years old, with his parents on the
vessel SS Finland. He could not speak English and for that reason his first petition to file for
citizenship was denied on October 13, 1914 but he got his final documentation in June 1917, half a
year after his marriage. In the same year he got a job as clerck for Louis Heckman Furniture.
Upstairs in the Heckman Building he managed a photography shop. In 1926 he got his own photography
studio on State St. in the former Otto Hilst Funeral Parlor. At that time he and Bess had his niece
Clara (B.1.2.1.) as servant. His hobby of photography was developed in to a successful
business. He served the people of Manito-IL with pictures taken by him: C.J. DeSutter, the Kodak
Finisher. Next to the photo studio he build the new DeSutter Grocery Store. In August 1931, Chris,
together with his brother in law Nelson Scherer (B.1.1.1.), put in a new
basement to his store on State St. in order to make more storage room.
DeSutter Grocery and Supply Store was in 1937 one of
the most attractive places of business.
Bertha Scherer-DeSutter (B.1.1.1.) worked for Chris from 1936 till 1945. In
November1940
he purchased the Heckman store building. The furniture department at the front became one of
the most up-to-date super markets in Central Illinois, owned and operated by Chris. He became
president of the Village Board of Manito from 1949-1951. Because of this important job, Chris
sold the old Heckman building to his son-in-law Harold Willett, husband of his daughter Elsie
(1.)
Nephew Frank DeSutter (B.1.1.10.) purchased the building in 1959 from the Willets. |
